Stihl MS 500i R: 28-inch wrap-handle chainsaw with electronically controlled fuel injection, 6.7 BHP, and 14.6 lb dry powerhead weight built for professional forestry and tree service.

Stihl MS 500i R — 28-inch wrap-handle fuel-injected saw

The MS 500i R is Stihl’s wrap-handle pro saw built for forestry personnel and tree-service crews who work from multiple positions—felling, bucking, and delimbing where a half-wrap won’t give you the leverage you need. Its defining feature is electronically controlled fuel injection, making it the first production chainsaw on the worldwide market to combine injection metering with a full-wrap handlebar.

Powerplant and injection system

The stratified-charge two-stroke engine displaces 4.8 cu-in and produces 6.7 brake horsepower. Instead of a conventional carburettor, an electronic control unit meters fuel continuously against changing load, temperature, and altitude, so the saw holds consistent power without manual tuning. The result is rapid acceleration and steady output under loads that would make a carburetted saw sag.

Work-ready configuration

The saw is setup as a 28-inch system on 3/8” pitch chain with a bar groove width of .050”. Device weight (dry powerhead only) is 14.6 lb, and the full system weight without fuel, including bar and chain, is 18.4 lb. That puts the power-to-weight ratio at 2.2 lb/hp. Overall length with the bumper spike installed is 18.9 inches, so it stays relatively compact for a 28-inch saw.

Who the wrap handle is for

The R suffix means a wrap-around handlebar. It lets you reposition your hands when working off-side, cutting from a bucket, or limbing in tight quarters—this is not the model for straightforward firewood blocking where a half-wrap is lighter and cheaper. If your work doesn’t demand those alternate hand positions, you’re paying extra weight and cost for a feature you won’t use.

Features & Benefits

Anti-Vibration System

STIHL has developed a system for minimizing the vibration levels of handheld outdoor power equipment. The STIHL anti-vibration system helps reduce operator fatigue and provides a more comfortable working experience.

Decompression Valve

The decompression valve, also referred to as 'deco' or 'deco valve', vents compression in the cylinder for easier starting. The decompression valve temporarily reduces the compression in the combustion chamber during cranking and helps reduce the effort needed to pull the starter rope. It is opened manually and closes automatically as soon as the engine fires.

Ematic™ Lubrication System

The Ematic™ guide bar, when used with STIHL OILOMATIC® saw chain, will provide proper lubrication and less oil consumption than conventional methods. The system works because two ramps, strategically placed in the guide bar rail, help contain the flow of oil and direct all lubrication to the sliding faces of the bar and chain links as well as the rivets and driver holes, which in turn can reduce bar oil consumption up to 50%.

Extended Chip Deflector on Sprocket Cover

The deflector helps to route chips, dust, and debris downward and away from the operator.

HD2 Air Filter

The HD2 air filter on this unit is washable, providing extremely long filter life and lowering maintenance costs. The large surface area allows for longer run times between cleanings and high performance even while operating in dusty and dry conditions. Overall, the HD2 air filter provides better protection of the engine compared to standard air filters.

High Output Adjustable Oiler

When used with STIHL OILOMATIC ® saw chain and STIHL Ematic ™ guide bars, the high output oiler can supply additional lubrication if needed for longer guide bars and/or dry/dusty cutting conditions.

High Power-to-Weight Ratio

This feature allows users to get more done by minimizing fatigue.

Lightweight Sprocket Cover with Captive Bar Nuts

The sprocket cover is lightweight and the captive bar nuts are held securely in place for efficient saw chain maintenance.

MS-Wrap Handle (R)

Saw can be used in multiple positions for felling or limbing with hands in the proper positions.

Master Control Lever™

The Master Control Lever™ is an easy to use single lever, operating the choke, starting throttle lock, and on-off switch. The operator must pull the throttle trigger before moving the Master Control Lever™ to the choke position.

New Generation MDG 1 Diagnostic Software

This product's diagnostic software allows dealers to quickly identify what service might be needed.

Purge Pump Primer

The purge pump primer feature enables the user to prime the carburetor with fuel, enabling easier starting. The purge pump primer is designed in a way that the operator cannot flood the machine by priming the carburetor too many times. Flooding the engine is still possible if the choke is not removed after the engine turns over.

Quarter Turn Lock on the Air Filter Shroud

The quarter-turn shroud lock provides quick access, so users can quickly and efficiently service the chain saw with minimal down time on the job.

Quick Acceleration

Quick acceleration helps deliver excellent cutting performance.

STIHL ElastoStart™

The ElastoStart™ starter handle is an exclusive feature of STIHL. It is a starting grip with a built-in shock absorber that helps reduce the effort when pulling on the starter cord. The ElastoStart™ starter grip noticeably reduces the sudden peak forces (compression) normally felt during cranking. The forces which occur at the grip after the first compression stroke are smoothed out.

STIHL Quickstop®

STIHL chainsaws are equipped with a chain stopping system designed to reduce the risk of injury in certain kickback situations. It is called a STIHL Quickstop® chain brake. The STIHL Quickstop® chain brake is designed to stop the rotation of the chain if activated by the operator’s hand or by inertia if the saw kicks back with sufficient force. In some working positions, the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake can be activated by inertia, stopping the chain within fractions of a second.

Sensor-Controlled Fuel Metering

Sensor-controlled fuel metering delivers the right amount of fuel.

Side-Access Chain Tensioner

The side-access chain tensioner makes it much more convenient for the user to adjust the saw chain with a bar wrench as opposed to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw.

Simplified Starting Procedure

Saves the user time and reduces the chance of flooding the engine when starting.

Throttle Trigger Lock

Toolless Fuel and Oil Caps with Retainers

Simply lift the lever and twist the caps to remove or tighten. There’s no need to use a tool to tighten or loosen.

Translucent Fuel Tank

The semi-transparency allows operators to easily check the fuel level before starting work.

Unique Bumper Spike Design

Unique bumper spike design ensures pros can expect optimal performance regardless of what species of tree they're cutting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The MS 500i R uses electronically controlled fuel injection that adjusts mixture for load, elevation, and temperature on the fly, so you get consistent power without seasonal carburettor retuning.
The wrap handle is for cutting in multiple positions. If you’re limbing from a bucket, felling off-side, or working steep ground, the full-wrap gives you an alternate handhold. For straightforward firewood bucking on flat ground, a half-wrap MS 500i saves weight and money.
The dry powerhead is 14.6 lb and the full system with a 28-inch bar and chain is 18.4 lb before fuel. This is a professional saw; check that you will be comfortable running it all day in your typical workflow.
